On November 15, 2017, The Women in Public Service Project at the Wilson Center hosted a private conversation with the UAE Gender Balance Council, featuring Her Excellency Mona Al Marri, Vice President of the UAE Gender Balance Council (UGBC) and Director General, Government of Dubai Media Office (GDMO).

H.E. Al Marri and the UAE delegation discussed the history of women’s rights within the United Arab Emirates, and the work of the UGBC. The UGBC was established in 2015 to reduce the gender gap across all government sectors in the country; enhance UAE's ranking in global reports on gender equality; and promote gender balance in decision-making positions. Since its inception, the UGBC has promoted initiatives and projects that seek to improve gender balance. In conjunction with the OECD, it has also introduced a Gender Balance Guide and Index.

UAEDuring the meeting, the UAE delegation also discussed the progress of the UGBC. Outcomes and Findings of the Gender Balance Guide were presented. The need for gender budget initiatives was emphasized, as well as a conversation on how to bridge gaps in data collection gaps. Throughout this event, participants also had the opportunity to ask questions about the UGBC’s work, and propose solutions for the future of the UGBC.

The UAE Gender Balance Guide is a tool for organizations in the UAE to work towards gender balance and representation. It includes actions that leaders should take to promote gender equality in the workplace, and explains how to measure progress in women’s leadership. Learn more here.
