Joan Libby Hawk's Story
For more than 15 years, Joan Libby Hawk worked with UN organizations, UN WOMEN and the UN Global Compact, designing and implementing innovative approaches to realize women's human rights, end violence against women, expand women's economic empowerment and increase women's ability to participate in the arenas of their choice. She successfully expanded and diversified the organizations' funding base, sharpened their public profile and developed long-term partnerships with companies, celebrities, NGOS and other UN agencies to support groundbreaking work in the developing world. To advance gender equality in the private sector, she spearheaded the creation of the Women’s Empowerment Principles – Equality Means Business, seven steps that business can take to open opportunities for women in the workplace, marketplace and community and served for six years as the Special Advisor to UN Women and UN Global Compact on their Women’s Empowerment Principles partnership initiative. She developed the innovative Communication X-CHANGE, a first of its kind interactive internet-based library for communications materials on ending violence against women for FUTURES Without Violence, funded by the Avon Foundation for Women. Currently, she is CEO of Libby Hawk Associates and is advancing a career as a studio potter/artist, exhibiting and teaching.
